Rediscovering Your Faith: How to Come Back to God

Have you ever drifted away from God? Maybe you used to be a passionate believer, but now you find yourself struggling to pray, read the Bible, or even think about God. If so, you're not alone. Many Christians go through seasons of spiritual drift.

What is Spiritual Drifting

Spiritual drift, also known as "faith drift" or "backsliding," is the gradual process of moving away from a relationship with God. It can happen to anyone, but it is especially common among for new believers. There are many reasons why people drift away from God including:

  1. Life Challenges: Major life changes or challenging circumstances such as illness, loss of a loved one, financial problems, or other personal crises can lead individuals to question their faith and become disengaged from religious practices.

  2. Doubt and Questioning: People may experience doubts or question aspects of their faith or religious teachings. These doubts can lead to a sense of disconnect from religious beliefs and practices.

  3. Social and Cultural Influences: External factors such as secularization, cultural shifts, or a secular education can challenge or erode religious beliefs. Exposure to different worldviews and belief systems can also contribute to spiritual drift.

  4. Moral and Ethical Dilemmas: Conflicts between personal values, ethics, and religious teachings can create tension and lead individuals to drift away from their faith.


  5. Burnout and Spiritual Fatigue: Overcommitment to religious activities, service, or leadership roles can lead to spiritual burnout. The overwhelming demands of religious life can make individuals question their beliefs and need a break from their religious community.

  6. Lack of Spiritual Nourishment: Sometimes, individuals don't find the spiritual nourishment they need within their religious community. If they feel disconnected or unsupported, it can lead to spiritual drift.

  7. Negative Religious Experiences: Experiences of hypocrisy, judgment, or mistreatment within a religious community can push people away from their faith.

  8. Relocation: Moving to a new location can disrupt one's religious routines and community involvement, making it easier to drift away from their faith.

  9. Lack of Interest: In some cases, people may simply lose interest in their faith or religious practices, leading to spiritual drift.

Spiritual drift is a dangerous process. When we drift away from God, we become vulnerable to spiritual attack. We also lose out on the many blessings that God has for us.

Guilt and shame can hold us back from returning to God. They may whisper that we are unworthy of His love or that we are too far gone. But these are lies from the enemy. God loves us unconditionally, and He is always waiting for us to come back to Him.

God's love for us is so vast and deep that it is impossible for us to fully comprehend. It is a love that is unwavering and everlasting, even when we drift away from Him.

Prayer is the perfect conduit to restore your relationship with God, and it doesn't require elaborate, drawn-out religious rituals. Instead, it's about engaging in heartfelt conversations with the divine while inviting the Holy Spirit to guide you.

God, in His infinite wisdom, knows you better than you know yourself. He comprehends your innermost thoughts and emotions. Open your heart to Him through prayer. Confess the moments of drifting, the times when you felt lost, and the departures from His loving care. Approach Him in prayer with unwavering faith and genuine intent, knowing that He is always listening.

Prayer is an intimate and unthreatening conversation with God. It's a place where you can pour out your heart, free from judgment.

The Bible is your rock, the stuff that the world and everything in it is built on. Your eyes will never be the same after reading this book.

The Bible is not dull or routine, even though drifting from God may have made it look that way. It's full of secrets, exciting stories, and deep lessons. It includes stories about everything from wonders to the most everyday things that people do.

The Scripture tells you how to live your life and shows you who God is. You can read about God's holiness, loyalty, grace, power, and love in the Bible. He is still the same God, and His love for you will never change. This truth can't be changed by your movement.

Rebuilding Your Spiritual Path: Goals to Reconnect with God

Remember, you're never too far gone for God. You can always return to the Lord Jesus. Drift is a temporary condition when you have a loving God who relentlessly pursues you.

If you've drifted away from God, don't despair. There are steps you can take to reconnect with the Lord and follow Him more closely. Here are a few tips to coming back to God:

  • Give up the thing or things that caused you to drift in the first place. Give up the thing or things that caused you to drift in the first place. Make a point to just leave them at the feet of Jesus. Give up any and all sin. Let go of all distractions from people or other things.
  • Follow God. Be determined to just simply obey the God and the Word of God at all costs. No matter what you face, obey in your heart the instructions of the Lord.
  • Find an accountability partner. This is someone who can listen to you without judgment and support you as you reconnect with the Lord.
  • Let go of shame and guilt. You may feel shame or guilt regarding your season away from God; let them go. Remember that God loves you and forgives you, no matter what you've done. Guilt and shame are tactics of the devil to keep you away from God.  
  • Attend church regularly. Establish a routine for attending church regularly. This is a great way to connect with other believers and grow in your faith.
  • Study and Obey the Bible. The Bible is God's Word, and it's the best way to learn about Him and His will for your life. There may many different types of Bible studies (i.e., online, in person, self-study). Find one that works for you and attend. However, remember it is important to not to just read His Word but to apply it you your life.
  • Make time for worship. This could involve singing, praying, or simply reflecting on God's goodness.
  • Connect with a spiritual leader. This could be your pastor, a small group leader, or another trusted believer.
  • Set aside time for quiet reflection and prayer. Talk to God about your day, your struggles, and your hopes and dreams.

  • Let go of distractions. This may involve spending less time on social media, watching less TV, or avoiding certain activities or people.
  • Keep an eternal life perspective. Put things of the world in their proper place. Remember that this life is temporary and that eternity is our true home.

Following God is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself and trust that God is leading you back to Him. Remember, the Lord loves you and wants to have a close relationship with you.
